Some Book Reviews Are Better Than Others. When A Distinguished Veteran Of The St. Louis Police Department Calls And Says, "I Loved Your Book, SHOE TOWN!" It Made All The Typing Worthwhile.

Dear Pals,

The other day my pal Joe Halloran of the Halloran Cleaning Empire called me and said, "Expect a call from Colonel Jim Hackett." It seems that the Colonel and I both share the same cleaner, and that my pal Joe gave the Colonel a copy of SHOE TOWN.

Well it happened.

Col. Hackett, Chief of Detectives STLPD ret., called. We talked for a long time. He said, "You nailed the coroner, you nailed the 7th District and you nailed the establishment at Grand and Dodier, and you nailed the furniture store."

It seems that as a young lad, Jimmy Hackett worked every summer at Sportsman's Park and used to run baseball tickets across the street to the VIPs that frequented the establishment. He even knew the name of the bratender*** and the one-armed driver.

We talked of cops and robbers, good lads and bad girls, haunts like The Zebra Room and Mascara's on 39th Street. The conversation reaffirmed my belief and the contention of SHOE TOWN, that, "In St. Louis, it's all connected."

Col. Hackett recognized many of the colorful characters on both sides of the law who skipped the light fantastic in the pages of SHOE TOWN.

Col. Hackett also knew my Uncle Joe, Uncle Harry and Aunt Peggy and lots of other folks in my ancestral Irish-side bloodline. He told me that he was going to put together a lunch with him, the Halloran brothers and me and that he'd help me "fill in some of the blanks."

I told him that if SHOE TOWN resonated with him and brought back a lot of memories of St. Louis in the days of The Irish Enterprises, that there was no higher praise.

I was simultaneously elated and humbled...when a person who lived the SHOE TOWN experience as man and boy says, "You nailed it."

Well, it doesn't get any better than that does it Grandpa?

Warren Buffett Defends Goldman Sachs: It Might Be News To The New York Times...But It Shouldn't Be A Surprise.

The Sunday NYT carried this blurb on the bottom of page one: Buffett Defends Goldman.

Inside the A-Section on page 26, there is the story: Buffet Offers Support Of Goldman At Meeting.

There is also a great and somewhat ironic photo of good old Warren, "The Sage of Omaha" belting out a song with a guitar in hand. With eyes turned skyward like Elmer Gantry, WB looks like he's singing the praises of Goldman-Sachs to the Bershire-Hathaway faithful assembled there.

In paragraph 3, the story states that "Berkshire owns $5 Billion of preferred stock in Goldman."

I love the words, "newly important" - as one of We The Dummies out here in the unenlightened Midwest, I always thought financial stability was the core mission of the Fed.

1) Let's bring back RECESS! Hard play outdoors in all kinds of weather for 45-minutes.

2) Let's play sports after school! Outdoors in sunshine, rain, snow and cold and warm..not on Wii.

3) Let's have Mom and Dad cook at home and actually eat with the kids

4) Let's eat acorn-squash with our MEAT and green salad, instead of meeting with ACORN to set up a Ho-Jo-Joint to squash "the man" - if you know what I mean (wink)

5) Let's eat fresh instead of dialing 1-800-FAT-FOOD!

Let's put the onus where it belongs...on Mom and Dad.

And gang, reading is actually something that schools can teach and kids need to master,  like the old 3r's reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic.

Once the kids get the old 3 r's down pat...then they can read nutrition books and food labels, write down a diet plan and do the 'rithmetic on calories, carbs, fats and sugars.

We don't need the Federal government in our freezer or 'frigerator!

The Idea of Momma Obama and The Bod Squad staring out at me from behind the box of frozen White Castle brand hamburgers, ice ceam, bratwursts, bacon and Jelly Donuts...is more than a bit chilling.

Birk's Fearless Forecast for 2009 - as published on January 12, 2009

Dear Pals,

Here I go sticking my scruffy little neck out with a Fearless Forecast for 2009. This will create a few nods of agreement, hopefully a few laughs, some head-scratching and more than a little head-shaking and, I suspect, even some calls for a straight jacket to be fitted for yours truly. Enjoy! Hahahaha!

1. 2008 Will End - I predict this with absolute certainty. This is actually a postdiction instead of a prediction, but I thought it best to start our with at least one thing that is believeable.

2. Frugal Is The "New Cool" - flashy and conspicuous displays of wealth are out - saving money is in. Vacations will still be treats for many...but, out-of-sight, bought on sale and farther away from home, shorter and much more discreet. Nobody's flashing wealth in the presence of unemployment that will blow through the 8% and 9% level and breach 10.2% by mid-Q2-2009. Yike!

3. Blagojevich Will Create A Really Bad Smell - when the writ hits the fan in the wake of his impeachment, Blago will sing like a canary and the sewer lid will be lifted off Windy City Politics. The unsavory odor will waft skyward and cling to many others near and far. Blago should be very careful starting his car and avoid attending any Valentine's Day parties...hey, it's Chicago.

4. Consumers Will Remain Very Tight-fisted - nobody feels rich, many 401(k)s are now 101(k)s and buyers, while not out of cash, will be very slow to spend and picky-picky and pickier than ever. Only great values and extraordinary customer service will win sales.

5. One Big Worry Will Be Eliminated For Many People - they will no longer have to worry about outliving their money. Mainstreet investors will become increasingly wary of all financial advisors. Cash in the coffee can may even return. Or, as G. Gordon Liddy says, "GOLD!"

6. The Values Of The Greatest Generation Will Have A Rebirth - Baby Boomers are now Senior Boomers and they will harken back to what they learned about "hard times" at the knee of their grandparents and parents. Books on rugged individualism, independence and self-reliance will gain in ever increasing popularity. Basic training in bedrock life skills like saving, work ethic values, square dealing and self-reliance will once again be emphasized.

In a surprising resurgence, Theodore Roosevelt's life and epic actions will be revisited in many books. WWTRD wristbands (What Would Teddy Roosevelt Do) might even emerge as visible statement of American strength of character, optimism and idealism as TR's trust-busting-style of personal integrity and zest for living takes hold and the values and energy of the old Rough Rider ride again. Ironically, the Bull Moose-hunting Governor of Alaska will play a leading role in this resurgence of the rugged individualism movement.

7. The Political Elite Class - "These PECers" will promise pork-free transparency to divert public attention from their past mis-deeds. As the Wizard of Oz said, "Don't be distracted by that man behind the curtain." Backroom deals will abound and disillusionment will begin to set in even more with an electorate already "fed-up with the Feds." 

In 2010's off year elections, many rascals and rascalettes will be thrown out. New revelations about scandals and shady sweetheart deals will emerge in 2009 in the wake of the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac debacles. Grassroots movements for holding the PECers accountable and for term limits will gain momentum. Attempts to sweep the dirt under the rug by the PECers will fail as the media slowly awakens from its enchanted spell.

8. The Economy Will Begin To Trend Upward - in late 2009 and early 2010, but nation-sponsored mischief and mayhem in the old and new world will cause it to temporarily sputter. Keep an especially close eye on Hugo and Raul in this hemisphere and the resurgent Russian Republic over there. The Monroe Doctrine is out the window and NATO's unity is further weakened as Putin flexes Russia's economic and energy muscles.

9. Big Changes In Our National Mood - America will find it's grit and gristle and determination again. A new spirit of pride in America, being American and in American-made goods will emerge. Special interest groups and divisive forces will begin to be diminshed as the sense of pulling toether replaces the politically-correct and senseless aberrant accomodations that serve only those who wish to pull us apart.

10. Me...Me...Me...the era of it's all about Me will give way to it's all about us and U.S. Returning U.S. Troops will be the spearpoint of a new spirit and American Can Do attitude that will take hold as we begin to focus on long term economic vitality instead of short term gains. Collegial cooperation, new education and new careers for Senior Boomers wil rapidly pick up pace and impact society in many very positive ways. Mentoring and becoming "Sages of Expertise and Hard Won Wisdom" to the 20 and 30-somethings will be a big opportunity.

11. An Esoteric And Spiritual Y2K-Like Surge - driven by frustrating and challenging life situations, a rising interest in the "Mayan end time year 2012," will cause interest in the spiritual realms to reach incredible new heights.

It's already begun - witness the latest Indiana Jones movie about the Crystal Skulls or National Treasure I and II , or the new psuedo-documentary TV shows on the once obscure writings of Michel de Notre Dame, The Book of Revelation and the 2012 Mayan prophecies. Great news for my pal George Noory and his Coast-To-Coast cadre.

12. Retirement Not- many will choose to continue working. Millions because they have to. Many more will work because they want to and know that work is essential to an active mind and healthy body. New workers will find themselves competing with healthy and capable seasoned seniors for jobs.

13. Retail: The "Too Big" Backlash - consumers will also realize that "Always low prices" aren't always everything. Consumers will realize that retail diversity, customer care and competitive services are essential to a thriving economy. Many will eschew the super-sized chains and seek out smaller niche retailers with quality products at reasonable prices - that employ their neighbors.

14. Made In America - A keep the jobs here movement will begin to gain traction. Especially in dry goods, light manufacturing and many family-products that Mothers buy. People will be willing to buy US-made goods so that American's have jobs - but they will not pay a premium for the privilege, so, new leaner business models, pay for productivity incentives and new manufacturing and distribution technology needs to be deployed.

15. Green Power - will prove much easier to say than do, no matter how much money is thrown at it. Ethanol will fall from favor. But look for a surprising breakthough in synthetic fuel for cars and trucks based on the Nazi-developed technology used at the end of WWII to create synthetic fuel for Hitler's Panzer Legions. An old plant near St. Louis, Missouri that tested that technolgy after the war for now defunct Lion Oil will cause renewed interest in this process. Hey, it powered Tiger tanks...now it may fill our cars' tanks with a new Tiger. Maybe Exxon will resurrect the Tiger in Your Tank idea?

16. Iran And The Middle East- regime changes will come about in a surprising way thanks to a new movement led by a woman. She will have a heretofore unheard of influence in the Islamic world. Her message will resonate with millions of other women who will move in unison and the pillars of male-dominated societies from Somalia to Teheran will be shaken and many regimes will fall. The woman will also be black and over 60 years-old. She will be called "The Mother Of The Heart of Nations" by millions of women worldwide.

17. Continental Europe - will have a resurgence in Franco and German nationalism that will create a great deal of friction for the non-European ethnic populations living among them. Many will return to their homelands bringing with them skills learned in Europe and a new motivation to create wealth in their native homelands. Turkey will lead the way in this as many Turks leave Germany.

18. Texas Will Win The BCS Championship - Driven by a sense of being deeply and badly screwed, the "Longhorns" will win convincingly. Tebow will get his degree and play. But the Gator Nation will not repeat in the BCS Championship.

19. Food Trends - Cooked at or Finished-At-Home eating will rise sharply. Mom and Dad and family dining together will be driven by neccessity and unemployment. The joy of eating a home-cooked/finished meal together will be rediscovered. Good news for supermarkets, producers of moderately priced heat 'n eat products and ingredient-style products that help make low-cost family meals from scratch fast- IE: Pasta dishes, omelets, quick cassaroles, Crock Pot meals, hearty stews, macho chilis, Sloppy Joes, Sliders and et cetera. Trend is bad news for many small independent look-a-like neighborhood restaurants. McDonald's and Taco Bell will do fine. Frozen 1/2 -cooked pizzas that are home delivered in low-priced trio-multi-packs will be introduced by Papa John's. People will order ahead and store them in freezer. Just heat 'em and eat 'em. One delivery trip = one delivery tip...but, three sales for PJ's.

20. President Obama Will Fire A Major Cabinet Member - this will have a big impact on the U.S. political and world scene. Just like Truman fired McArthur, Obama will fire Hillary Clinton for similar reasons in late 2009 or early 2010. Politics has always made strange bedfellows...but, three's a crowd.

But, regardless of the alias du jour, the source of this "hate and violence" has a few well-stated milestones by which it may be recognized in any cloak of deception:

1) Destruction of Isreal (The Little Satan)

2) Destruction of America (The Great Satan)

3) Destruction of western civilization and its institutions

The source of this "hate and violence" has had only ONE GOAL since the day of its founding.

    Establishment of a worldwide Islamic Caliphate under Sharia law.

There is no "separation of church and state" here. 

This source of "hate and violence" is a totalitarian life management system complete with its own Shaira Laws for personal life, business, worship, hygeine, female circumcision, dhimmitude for Jews and Christians, death for non-compliant unbelievers, beheadings and amputations for crimes and even dictates for womens' fashions and opportunities outside the home.

NOTE: The National Organization of Women., Planned Parenthood, Revlon, Avon, Jenny Craig, Max Factor, Clinique, Estee Lauder, Chanel No. 5, Oil of Olay, the ACLU and Pork,the Other White Meat...might want to "look into this." 

As you will learn, this source of "hate and violence" is first and foremost a MENTAL State, a Mental Land...not a geographic or political state with cities and boundaries.

This source of "hate and violence" also has a game plan in a book (Koran, Quran, Qur'an) and in subsequent commentaries ( Holy Hadith et cetera ) that lays out in excruciating details the the step-by-step process to achieve the ONE GOAL.

The "citizens" who belong to and are indoctrinated into this Mental State are called Muslims. They would like us to think of them as normal, peace loving people.

They even prefer to be hyphenated this way: Muslim-Americans, Muslim-Britons, Muslim-Europeans...note, Muslim always comes FIRST.

Their own self-concept as a Muslim, means they owe their FIRST and ONLY allegiance to Islam and they put Sharia Law above and before all other laws. Including The Magna Carta, Napoleonic Code, Bill of Rights, The U. S. Constitution and The Geneva Convention.

Even the benignly-sounding Council On Islamic-American Relations (C.A.I.R.) puts the word "Islamic" FIRST. This organization's name sounds like "Care" - but, it really rhymes with "Scare!"
